The construction of the largest tourist complex ever to be built in Cape Verde, the Santiago Golf Resort, this has been re-launched as fresh capital was assured from a Portuguese company and private Cape Verdean business interest. The project's total costs equal two annual government budgets.

The Portuguese group Sacramento Campos announced that constructions on the Santiago Golf Resort were to be re-launched as new capital was raised for the project. Sacramento Campos contributed with 75 percent of the fresh funds while the local businessman Eugénio Inocêncio contributed with the remaining 25 percent. The first stage of the giant project was already launched in 1999 and has been finished. The Santiago Golf Resort has a total budget of euro 550 million, roughly the double of Cape Verde's annual government budget.

Ernie Els is promoting Golf Resorts in Cape Verde

Former world golf champion, South African Ernie Els, arrived earlier this week in Cape Verde to promote the golf resorts Calheta Bay (on Sal) and Baía Golf Resort (on São Vicente), which, according to promoters, will place Cape Verde on the world golf circuit. Els is the architect of two golf courses, both of which are certified by the Professional Golf Association, which means that they will be apt to host international professional golf tournaments.

Former world golf champion and the holder of various titles and records in the sport, Ernie Els is one of the ten bets players in the world at present, and arrived this week in Cape Verde for a work visit to Sal and São Vicente on the invitation of the promoters of the golf resorts to be built on the two islands - Calheta Bay and Baía das Gatas, the first belonging to Cape Verdean company Turim and to Irish company Cape Verde Development, and the second belonging to a partnership between Cape Verde Development and Cape Verdean company Baía Investments. In addition to these two courses, the promoters of Santiago Golf Resort in Praia are also eyeing the possibility of hosting major internal tournaments.

Although nothing concrete has yet been decided, the owners of Santiago Golf Resort have expressed their intention to enter into a partnership with the Professional Golf Association to promote their future 18-hole-plus-nine course.
